The studio will be closed from July 23 – August 8th.

And what’s a blog post without an image! Alex is in Italy right now for a month (and I miss her so much!!!). Here’s a photo of her I took last month on her 16th birthday. I can’t tell you how much I love this photo….it makes my heart skip a beat.

Daniela Berkhout Photography is moving…..about 60 feet away! Many of you have seen the Carriage House in our backyard – it’s a post and beam structure dating back to 1870. We were very close to tearing it down as we didn’t think it was structurely sound. Back in the fall, we had Todd Barber of Forestgreen Creations come to help us complete the exterior of our house as well as the landscaping. His eyes lit up when he saw the Carriage House. He said he’s restored carriage houses in worse condition then ours!! Todd referred us to an engineer who confirmed that the integrity of the 130 stucture was solid and gave my hubby a list of what needed to be done. A lot of work was done in the fall – the structure was straightened, re-inforced, given a new foundation and new roof.

Now the exciting part begins! Heated concrete floors (Todd’s suggestion) go in next week and we just ordered gorgeous wood french doors for the entrance (northern facing…a photographer’s dream). Hopefully in 8 weeks, the new studio will be completely enclosed. There’s still a lot of work to be done (my poor, poor husband) but in the end it’s truely going to be my dream studio. The new studio will have a washroom/change room, kitchen/bar area, stone fireplace with large tv above for my client viewings, shooting areas and loft office area. I don’t think I’ll ever leave when it’s done!!! I already have everything picked out from the sofa and chairs, area rug, armoire to the stone for the fireplace and fixtures. I AM BEYOND THRILLED. The only problem is I’m impatient and I want it finished now!!! I cannot wait. I’ve been driving Darby (my husband) crazy but he’s been married to me for over 17 years….so he’s used to it! I’ll be posting photos of the progress. Oh and there will definitely be an open house in the fall when it’s complete!

This is my friend Cathy. Those who know her, know what an incredible person she is. Cathy’s a wonderful nurse, mother, wife, friend. She’s such a positive, uplifting person to be around and beautiful…inside and out. Cathy was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She describes the past year as a journey – a journey that has made her a stronger person. She just recently completed all of her chemo and wanted to document and celebrate this with a photo session (it was also a surprise Valentine’s gift for her husband).

When I look at Cathy’s photos I see strength, I see confidence, I see beauty.

Cathy – you are such an incredible, strong person…..love you!

My baby turns 12 today…I still can’t believe it!

If I had to describe Mackenzie in 10 words it would be:

Happy Birthday Mackenzie! Love you so much and you know you’ll always be my baby.

I was looking forward to photographing this family. Jacob is a school friend of Mackenzie’s and I was hoping to get some good dirt on him but Jacob wouldn’t say a word about Mackenzie. He would smirk but I got nothing out of him….now that’s a friend!

I love this photo. I looks like a dove above their head watching over them. OK I know it’s a seagull….just work with me here!

I adore this one. Natacha – you are beautiful!

Sunset Tutu | Niagara Photographers

I can’t believe summer is over! I was going through my summer photos from the cottage and had to share these. I had this photo in my head since last summer and finally managed to take it this year.

It wasn’t the easiest to get. First, we needed a beautiful sunset and considering the number of rainy days we had, our days were limited. Secondly, I needed a willing model (the problem was So You Think You Can Dance was always on when we had a sunset and Alex didn’t want to miss it. O.k. – I didn’t want to miss it either). And thirdly, I needed a co-pilot to steer the paddle boat!

We took the paddle boat out to a small rock island near the cottage. The water was really rough, so Mackenzie, my co-pilot, had a hard time keeping the paddle boat in position while I tried to take the photos. It was completely worth it though, because I *love* these images! Now which do I enlarge?

Alex turns 15 today. She is such a beautiful girl inside and out and has the warmest, kindest heart.

I consider myself blessed to have such an incredible daughter. Love you sweetie.
